    Default GERD- Acid Reflux

Anyone else notice a significant reductioin in gastric reflux ?

I pretty much stopped taking Prilosec a few weeks after I quit cigarettes in jan 2010 and switched to e-cigs.
I was taking once a day in the evening because i frequently had reflux in my sleep (gross) but now I realy haven;t had a incident in some time

A very cool side benefit I'd say, hoping others can corroborate. I really haven't changed any other habits including my evening wine rituals :-)

The man has acid reflux....I've noticed that he's stopped inhaling so much rolaids since he started vaping...

Bought him some Prilosec too...and i think he's stopped taking so much of that.

I never really paid attention, but since I've now thought about it. Yes there has been a reduction of occurrences. WOOHOO! I just didn't pay attention that some of the things I was eating stopped bothering me.

Great topic, and glad to hear all you guys talking about improvements. I can only hope that there is a relation between the two, though it may be something as simple as quitting smoking. Only time will tell.

There definitely is, I know I used to have massive reflux issues. Developed it originally and attributed it to taking too much Aleve for my carpal, then one night I bitched about it while I was working in the ER and the doc on duty was like, hey numbnuts, it's because you smoke too much!

I'd never thought of it affecting me so, but he was wise beyond his years. Now that I don't smoke, I don't have reflux... had to sleep in a chair for quite some time due to it just building up in my esophagus like a friggin volcano while laying down. Now I can grace my bed once again with all my glorious drool and occasional flatulence.

I have been suffering from the same thing, since I quit smoking and started vaping I have yet to see a reduction in the acid reflex (gerd). But then again the valve in my stomach that secrets stomach acid that dissolves food mine never closes so perhaps I it will never go away. But hey who knows

Really depends on how badly the sphincter ( the one on the top of your stomach, yes we have more than one =P )is degraded, the worst case of GERD is when it's not even constricting. One of the radio techs at the hospital I worked at was so bad he couldn't even bend over to pick things up or he'd have a throat full of bile.

I hadn't thought about it, but now that you mention it, my night time stomach acid thing has gone away too!

Cigarette and well, any smoke is bad for you. We all know this.

The physiology of smoking on the digestive tract-
Your epiglottis is a little structure at the top of your digestive tract that covers your trachea so food doesn't enter your lungs when you eat. Yet it doesn't prevent air from entering your stomach, hence having to burp babies. When you smoke, small amounts of that smoke enter your digestive tract, mainly the stomach and esophagus, where it is a strong irritant. It effects the mucus membranes and secretion of the mucus that lines these structures to protect the tract from the acidic contents of the stomach/digestive fluids. This is also why there are small incidents of stomach cancer in smokers, though smoking is usually a lung or oral problem first. The reason you're all having less GERD problems is because you're not constantly swallowing cigarette smoke, which is one less irritant your digestive tract has to fight. This is why those one the anti-inflammatory medication Celebrex are urged very strongly to stop smoking. Celebrex causes the stomach to bleed and smoking makes it an utter mess down there. I never had GERD or any acid problems while I was a smoker other than the occasional stomach ache but even those have vanished. I'm all for more benefits of vaping!!
